Monica Mei was born in Toronto with a Western upbringing rooted in Eastern aesthetics. Her appreciation of art and beauty embarked while accompanying her parents’ travels around the world. Since a young age, Monica Mei has been exposed to the many sights, sounds and splendors that different cultures have to offer.
She graduated from Ryerson University’s School of Fashion obtaining a Bachelor of Design degree in 2007. In her graduating year, Monica Mei won the coveted Ryerson University-wide Standard Broadcasting Corporation’s $25,000 Business Plan Competition for her designer label, Aime. Later that year, she obtained her Bachelor of Business Administration streaming in Strategic Management from the University of Toronto. In her first season, Aime by designer Monica Mei was selected by Flare magazine as being on “The A-list Canadian designers you need to know”. In December 2008, Monica Mei won the Ontario Partnership for Innovation and Commercialization $7000 business plan competition to continue international expansion of her label. She was also a 2009 Top 5 Finalist for the Fashion Design Council of Canada’s Fashion Designer Development Fund (Canada’s version of the CFDA/Vogue Fund), which highlights Canada’s top young emerging fashion designers. In 2010 and 2011, Monica Mei was honored to be a Canadian delegate for the inaugural G20 Young Entrepreneur Summit in Toronto and again in Nice, France. From 2011- 2013, Mei launched two fashion mobile apps including WhatImWear.in and The Shop Society. In 2012, she opened the Aime Showroom Boutique in Upper Yorkville. In 2014, Mei will be the Co-Regional Director for Fashion Group International Toronto.
With international stints at HBC in Toronto, Emporio Armani in New York, Johanna Ho in Hong Kong, and Ports International in China, Monica Mei has created a line inspired by experiences, travels, loves and dreams – fusing a new form of eco-luxe living for the Aime by Monica Mei contemporary collection.
